The history of the Vasco de Quiroga school has been accompanied by determined, committed people driven by the desire to transform society through education.
In 1958, Teresian nuns Carmen Zabilde Vergara and Lucina Barragán Taylor with a group of students from the América school, who collaborated with Fr. Manual Vargas Góngora, gave catechism in the vulnerable neighborhoods of Mercedes Barrera and Castilla Cámara, cooperating with the parish of San Francisco de Asís.
The interest, as well as the desires of the Parish Priest and nuns to promote the spiritual well-being of the population that made up the vulnerable colonies in question, gave rise to the idea in 1964, promoted by nun Lucina Barragán, to establish in that place a center that will accompany the development of life in religious, social and cultural matters.
The parish priest had land that he made available to the Teresian nuns to carry out these activities and they also insisted, if possible, that a small community of the Company of Saint Teresa of Jesus would be established there.
It was not until September 6, 1965 when the Teresian nuns Monserrat Brú and Lupita Peredo saw the effort materialize with the inauguration of two classrooms and a corridor that housed 155 children for their Christian and academic education.
The primary school was completed in 1969, where 275 children attended school daily. Many people comment about changes they observe in children, in their behavior, work habits, and help. From this year onwards, the different primary grades were incorporated.
On September 1, 1974, the School acquired its current name Vasco de Quiroga and began operating with its own official incorporation.
In 1980, studies began to create a new educational level: secondary school. The plan is approved and a new project begins. On November 6, 1986, the facilities of the new section were blessed with a mass.
On January 27, 1995, a step was taken in the growth of the School with the laying of the first stone of the building that would be used as the kindergarten. The dream came true and on September 4, 1995 it was blessed. From that date until now, the School has preschool, primary and secondary school. As time went by, with the effort and help of sisters, parents, staff and benefactors, improvements were made to the school, modernizing the facilities according to needs.
Our institution serves an average population of 421 students and we have approximately 2,540 graduates. It should be noted that, thanks to the support of the Company of Santa Teresa de Jesús, institutions,
companies and people committed to education, scholarships of 30%, 50%, 70% and 100% have been provided to students with economic needs and in vulnerable situations.
The staff of employees is made up of 52 people (Teresian nuns and lay people who make up the staff of administrative collaborators, teachers and general services).
Our institution has contributed significantly to improving the context in which it is located. The people of the area appreciate and recognize the educational work carried out by the Teresian community. Students, alumni and parents value the quality that the institution offers, knowing that it is a safe and accurate space for the integral formation of the person.
As an educational community we wish to continue favoring the context in which we find ourselves, putting all our efforts at the service of society, with the certainty that each action and gesture contributes to the transformation of a more human world with opportunities for all.
